Component : Red cells in additive solution

Description: 300 - 350 ml of RBCs in additive solution collected from 450 ml of whole blood

Indications: symptomatic anaemia acute or chronic for restoration of Oxygen carrying capacity

Dosage Effect: 1 unit RBC increases Hct 3%, increases Hb by 1gm% (approx.)

Special considerations: Must be ABO & Rh compatible and X- match compatible

Not indicated for: 1. Deficiency anaemias treatable pharmacologically 2. coaguation factor deficiencies

Shelf life: 35 days
Storage conditions: 2 o C - 6 o C

Component: Fresh frozen Plasma

Description: 200 - 250 ml, prepared within 6 hrs of whole blood collection preserving all clotting factors including labile factors (V & VIII)

Indications: Multiple coagulation factor deficiency, Massive transfusion, Liver disease, DIC, TTP

Dosage Effect: 10 -15 ml/kg increases factor levels 20 - 30%

Special Considerations: ABO compatible No Rh compatibility or X- match required

Not indicated for: Conditons responsive to volume replacement

Shelf life: Frozen 1 year
Storage conditions: -30 o C or lower. Use preferably within 6 hrs after thawing at 37 o C

Component: Cryoprecipitate

Description: 10 - 25 ml

Indications: Haemophilia A, Von Willebrand's disease, Hypofibrino- genemia, F XIII deficiency

Dosage Effect: Factor VIII - 1 unit/kg increases level by 2%

Special Considerations: No ABO, Rh or X- match required

Not indicated for: Conditions not deficient in contained factors

Storage conditions: -30 o C or lower. Use preferably within 6 hrs after thawing at 37 o C

Component: Platelets

Description: > 0.5 X 10 10 platelets from 450 ml of blood 45 - 65 mL

Indications: Bleeding from throbocyto penia, Functional defect of platelets

Dosage Effect: Increases platelet count by 5000 to 10000µ/L per unit

Special Considerations: Preferably group compatible. However, non group specific platelets can be given

Not indicated for: Plasma coagulation factor deficit, TTP, HUS, ITP except in life saving situations

Shelf life: 5 days (special bags)
Storage conditions: 20 o C - 24 o C with continuous agitation
